How to create your CV to suit your next Job (Part 1)

CV will be the very first thing HR uses to get to know you in the first place and it takes an employer just seven seconds to save or reject a job applicant’s CV. As they have many applicants in general, CVs will be looked at quickly and considerably because they don’t have time to spend hours looking at every text or even all the CVs. Thus, the CV should contain information which is clear, accurate and unique to catch the eyes of HR of the company you want to work with in the future.

The definition of CV

CV is the abbreviation of the Latin words “curriculum vitae” which mean “‘course of life”. CV has more detail than resume in general and contains information more than just autobiography.

CV is the combination of profile, contact information, summary of the work achievement, school, college and university in timeline to let HR know what skills you have and what kind of training you may need for the future.

Purpose of CV

The purpose of a CV is to let your future employer know that you are the right candidate for the job position they are looking for by reading to see if you meet their requirements or not.

So, the important thing is that you should read about the job description properly, then make sure that the information you add in the CV tells the readers that you are suitable for the position you are applying for. If not, your CV may not let you pass to the next step of interviewing.

However, if you do not meet all the requirements, this doesn’t mean you cannot apply to the jobs. As you never know about other applicants, what you can do is write about your skills and experiences that answer to what they want as much as you can even if it is just a part of it. What you should definitely add is also let them know about all the experience and educational information about you by explaining it in a compact and easy to understand way.

About CV format

Apart from the information, the CV format matters as well. Choose the format to suit your job. If your job is a professional position such as consultant or business analyst, you need a formal format to represent yourself for sure. On the other hand if your job is creative, your CV should somehow show them your creative side. Most of all it should be easy to read and not have too much text on it.

The suitable length for CV should not be longer than 2 sides of A4 paper because too long writing can lead to too much irrelevant information. The font should not be too varied. Your full name should be at the top with your contact information to be easier to see. Lastly, titles should be in bold to be easy to navigate the information. How your CV can make the first impression

After you create the CV, you should reread it to make sure that all information is correct and there are no errors on it to make the first impression of your future employer. HR read through hundreds or even thousands of CVs before so, they have eager eyes to see any errors on it. Errors can be typos, content, grammar, format and even style. It will be better to ask someone to read it for you again and use spell checker at the last stage.

The last thing which is the thing that many people step over is tailoring the CV to suit the position you are applying for. Because most people just reuse the previous CV or the same CV for many job offers and companies while they all differ in terms of job description and requirements. To stand out of the pile of CVs, creating it with unique information is the hook part that will get you to pass to the next step.
